| Button | Function of Tool |
Removes the selected text. Use the Paste command to insert the text in a different place. The shortcut keys Ctrl+X accomplishes the same thing.
Copies the selected text. Use the Paste command to add the text in a different place. The shortcut keys Ctrl+C accomplishes the same thing.
Pastes the cut or copied text where you place the mouse cursor. The shortcut keys Ctrl+V accomplishes the same thing - and works where this button will not.
Highlight the area you wish to affect, then click to apply preset formatting to the selected text. Preset formats like headings allow different browsers to display the text with emphasis regardless of font size selection on the surfer's browser. (?Image)
Highlight the area you wish to affect, then click to display your text in a specific font. MSN offers 9 default fonts from which to choose. If you want to insure everyone will be able to see your choice, it is best to use ony these 9. (?Image)
Highlight the area you wish to affect, then click to change the size of your text. There are 7 standard font sizes. Default setting is font size=3 and this should be used for the majority of pages. Do not overuse tiny/large font sizes as they can easily annoy guests! (?Image)
Makes your text bold.
Italicizes your text.
Underlines the selected text. You should avoid over-using the underline feature on web publications since guest will assume anything underlined is a clickable link.
Lines up your text, table or picture on the left. This is the default setting.
Centers your text, table or picture. Avoid over using this option! While it works fine for short sections of individual text, it is a hard format to read with large blocks.
Lines up your text, table or picture on the right.
Creates a numbered list. Will automatically update as you add/subtract items.
Creates a bulleted list. Will automatically update as you add/subtract items.
Moves text to the left (unindents previously indented blocks of text).
Moves text to the right (indents blocks of text).
Inserts a horizontal line. The colour, thickness and size of the line may only be adjusted using the HTML mode. Avoid over-using horizontal lines since it breaks up a page and provides discontinuity.
Inserts a link (either connected to an image or text) to a page within your group or to another Web site or another page at your group. You must use the shortcut keys Ctrl+V to paste any URL/HTTP address into this box as standard paste buttons will not function! Currently, you can copy the full address including the (extra) http: // without problem (MSN edits it out). You may link to standard webpages (http) or file transfer protocol servers (ftp) or to an email address (mailto) by selecting a different option from the drop down list. (?Image)
Inserts a table. (?Image) Tables are extremely important to master. They aid in the positioning of just about any MSN page. To make a table spread across the full page, you must edit the HTML code: adding the words width=100% to the TABLE tag. The table tool is also the only reliable way to set background colours on MSN and the only method to adding an image as a background. For more information on how to better use the table tool, see the tutorials: Tables for Newbies, Using Tables on your Site, Add a Background, and Advanced Tables.
| Adds a picture or photo to your message. Using this tool insures that everyone will be able to see the image, even if it is inserted from a private group. While using this tool, you may add the same image repeatedly without its file size being subtracted from your passport - only adding the image to an album the first time costs - you may add images from any album of any group to which you belong.
The option to add a file directly from your computer is only available in the message editor and will not appear for the page creation tool. |
Highlight first, then select to change the colour of your text. You should avoid changing the text colour too frequently. One or two colour changes to accent titles or links is fine but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Links default to blue/purple in most browsers. If you wish them to match the surrounding text, you must manually correct them after insertion. Avoid using light colours on a light background or dark on dark. Avoid the neon trap! Nobody likes reading neon, they will just leave you, alone, lost in the '80s.
Applies a background colour to your page. This option is only available for custom web pages and should not be used! MSN broke this toy during an upgrade and it has a nasty habit of turning all your backgrounds either white or black at random. Use the background colour selector for tables to set your background reliably on MSN.
Inserts an emoticon (an emotion icon) to convey feelings or add personality. All MSN's emoticons were designed with preteen girls in mind. If you would like to express yourself with an emoticon which doesn't scream, "I'm a flaming pansy!", you will need to upload your own versions as images and insert them from your MSN album.(?Image)
